Important antique Chinese Qianlong Period cinnabar lacquer tablescreen; elaborately carved, in tremendous detail; each side of the rectangular panel showing a figural scene, intricately rendered in layered relief; one side depicting Immortal figures and attendants engaged in various Daoist studies and practices, amid lush trees, roiling waves and rockery; the other side depicting figures carrying auspicious lingzhi, gourds and peaches along the shore of a tree-lined lake, toward sages standing atop a central pavilion balcony; both sides with swaths - sky and water - deeply carved to reveal shades of black beneath the vibrant cinnabar; all set within a scrolling lotus-patterned border; upon a stand carved with lotus motifs amid archaic-style leiwen borders and finely detailed diaper patterning; H: 26"
