Early 19th C. African 'Satimbe' Dogon Mask, Boasts a lively lady on top with multiple piercings with original metalworks dangling, including decorative beads and shells. The woman on top appears to be holding a raddle or other musical instrument. Similar masks have been used during at dama, a collective funerary rite for Dogon men - the ritual’s goal is to ensure the safe passage of the spirits of the deceased to the world of the ancestors; L 19 1/4" x W 9" x H 36 3/4"

Provenance: Dr. Peter T. Furst (1922-2015) collection thence by decent. Dr. Peter T. Furst was an anthropologist, author (150+ books) and teacher as well as the Foreign Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. Dr. Furst curated many exhibitions throughout the years.
