FINE FOSSIL CRINOID
Seirocrinus subangularis
Lower Jurassic, Toarcian stage
Fleins layers, Lias epsilon 2, Holzmaden, Germany
The graceful "lily of the sea" is found in fossil beds around the world, as well as in today's oceans - a true living fossil - but the most spectacular of all are found in the Posidonienschiefer shale of southern Germany, and this is a particularly fine example, with wonderfully snaking columnal and blooming crown, shimmering with pyritization and accompanied by four orthoceras cones in a dramatic dark gray plaque measuring 42 1/2 x 38 1/2 inches to make for a spectacular display piece.
